Auld End Games

Composition assignment for students using Auld Lang Syne.  Students will use basic motif manipulation techniques.

Compose a piece called Auld End Games.
  • Provide each student with their copy of one measure from Auld Lang Syne attached to one blank measure.
  • Have students compose in the blank measure using ONLY the notes and rhythms (note values) in the preceding given measure.
  • Collect all the 2-measure segments from students, string them together in the original order (all the M.1 followed by all the M.1 segments, then M.2 followed by all the M.2 segments, etc.) and glue them down on the large poster paper.
  • As the song has only 16 measures some duplicate measures may be presented.
A new, longer version with much internal variation has now been created.  For example (this example uses only one extra "variation" measure after each given measure):
