Yesterday I presented "Connecting the Dots.....Composition in the 21st Century Classroom" at the Statewide Music Educators Conference at the Monona Terrace in Madison, Wisconsin.

Great group of teachers, very full session (standing room only), great participation, enthusiasm and great emails sent to me expressing your appreciation and enjoyment of the session.  Many thanks guys!

We covered technology in the music composition class, soundscapes, sound sculptures, music cryptography, aleatoric music, compositional techniques such as repetition, sequence, augmentation, diminution, fragmentation, etc. Expanding notation skills, improving rhythmic reading through "stuff" and a lot of other fun ideas.

Hope I could send you home with many hands-on, ready to use ideas.  Thank you for your active participation.

Conference participants: respond to this blog and I'll send you a FREE copy of one of my publications.

Before going to your presentation, I had a very narrow scope of how to integrate composition into the classroom. Having never composed before, I also viewed composing as something that could only be done with many years of formal instruction. Thank you for opening my eyes and sharing your wisdom! There is no doubt in my mind that I will use the activities that were presented and use your publications in the future. Thank you!

Hi Mariah
Thank you so much for saying so. Loved working with your group. I teach all around the country and teachers are always telling me how many new and ready-to-use ideas they get from my workshops. Email me at [email protected] your publication of choice and an address and I'll drop your free publication in the mail. Enjoy!

Adriana,

I too went to WMEA and immediately on Monday tried the human xylophone to help with sight-reading exercises. WOW! What a great idea. I first had the students sing the xylophone, since I had more than 8 students for the scale I doubled the notes. Then we tried the sight reading note by note. Following the note by note, we all sang it as a class. WHAT A PHENOMENAL RESULT! The kids loved and the first comment by one of my lower students was:"Wow Mr. G, sight reading is so much easier than you taught it before. You should do more research more often! HAHA!. Thanks so much for your presentation at WMEA. Love the fact that you gave so many ready- to-use strategies. Much appreciated! Now how do I get those composition books with the discount code? Thanks!

Hi Shawn
Thank you so much for the feedback! Good to hear you could use some of the ideas in my workshop. I love hearing how teachers get ready-to-use, hands-on lessons they implement the very next day in their classes after a workshop. Way to go! Your FREE book is in the mail as soon as you email me a mailing address to [email protected] Look forward to hearing from you.
